Genere: romantico/comedy

Book blurb/Quarta di copertina

The untimely death of Anne de Bourgh, only days after his disastrous proposal at the Hunsford parsonage, draws Fitzwilliam Darcy and his cousin Colonel Alexander Fitzwilliam back to Rosings Park before Elizabeth Bennet has left the neighborhood. In death, Anne is revealed as having lived a rich life of the mind, plotting rather constantly to escape her loathsome mother, Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Anne’s journal, spirited into the hands of Charlotte Collins and Elizabeth, holds Anne’s candid observations on life and her family. It also explains her final quirky means of outwitting her mother. Anne’s Last Will and Testament, with its peculiar bequests, upheaves every relationship amongst the Bennets, Darcys, Fitzwilliams, Collinses, and even the Bingleys! Was Anne de Bourgh a shrewder judge of character than Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy combined?

Recensione

Review
(English)

What if Lady Catherine discovers that a person very close to her has compromised her daughter Anne? Will she kill him or find others subtle traps to save the de Bourghs' name?

In this story Elizabeth and Darcy meet again at Hunsford, after the disappointing first proposal, where the two characters have the possibility to know each other better. He proves her his worth meanwhile she, like in Pride and prejudice, reaches the conclusion that she misinterpreted his behaviour. The most beautiful scenes between them contain stolen gazes and never spoke words.

Since all the novel turns around the death and last wills of Anne, the author finds the way to tell a story in the story thanks to Anne's journals, that recount her life from the escaped elopment of Georgiana at Ramsgate till her death, including all the means she finds to escape her mother's control. Lady Catherine, in effect, is painted crueler and schemer than in others novels, leaving the reader shocked but amused, too.

Colonel Fitzwilliam is one of the successful characters in this book: he succeeds in realize himself economically and sentimentally. What a pity he was christened Alexander instead of Richard, thing that, given that I'm accustomed to the name Richard, made me reread some periods to find out who was this Alexander! LOL

The book cover totally expresses the hilarity of the novel, who can be categorized as tragicomic. Actually, there are a lot of scenes that make the reader smile and this, together with the love story, makes the book flowing and enjoyable.

I admit that I was pleasantly surprised by A will of iron because the story has the same style of The red Chrysanthemum, a novel that I really like. In effect, the scenes that I remember the most are those involving flowers. It's always a pleasure to read a book in which the author tells about things he/she really knows!

This novel contains mature contents!
